BASIC SKINCARE - CLEANSE / EXFOLIATE / MOISTURIZE

With all the new products , ads and infomercials that we are constantly being bombarded with, it is easy to lose sight of what basic skincare really consists of. We recommend keeping things simple. Basic skincare is as simple as 1 – 2 – 3 : Cleanse, Exfoliate, Moisturize.

1. Cleaning the skin
The most basic aspect of skincare. Cleaning the skin sets the stage for everything else that will take place on the skin. It is essential to find a gentle cleanser that your skin responds well to. Over cleansing or using cleansers that are too drying (detergent bar soaps!) is a major cause of skin irritation and dry patches. Using a cleanser that leaves a film on your skin will lead to clogged pores and prevent moisturizers from being absorbed and being able to do their job properly. It is essential to get this first step right – to thoroughly but gently clean the skin.

Recommendations:

We recommend that you first splash your face with warm water to help loosen dirt and unclog pores. Then apply a small amount of a water-soluble, gentle cleanser using a circular motion and then rinsing off with cool water. (Using excessively hot or cold water can cause broken capillaries) This process should be done only once a day, preferably at night. In the morning simply splash your face with lukewarm water. This should be enough to remove any excess oil from your nightly moisturizing. Try our Clearderma Foaming Cleansers to gently wash away dirt and impurities.

2. Exfoliating
Exfoliating is probably the most over-looked step in a basic skincare regimen. Exfoliating is the process of removing the top layer of dead skin cells which dull the complexion. Exfoliating scrubs are best used to do the job properly. It is important to cleanse with an exfoliating scrub once a week in order to ensure a healthy turnover of skin cells. Mature or sun - damaged skin can also benefit from deeper penetrating chemical exfoliating crèmes containing AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid ) or BHA ( Beta Hydroxy Acids). AHA Creme

Recommendations:

Once a week use an exfoliating scrub, preferably with fine grain particles, as a replacement for your usual gentle cleanser. First splash warm water on the skin and then gently massage on the scrub in a circular fashion. Rinse with cool water. Citrus Soleil Foaming Scrub

3. Moisturizing
The secret to good skin is to moisturize. But why? Moisturizers attract moisture and draw it into the skin while plumping and rejuvenating the skin cells. Moisturizers make use of ingredients called emollients. Emollients are pliable, skin- softening agents which have a natural affinity for the skin, readily merging with and mimicking the natural lipids contained in the skin’s structure. (Examples of emollients are shea butter, cocoa butter, lanolin, and vegetable or plant oils such as olive, aloe, sweet almond, jojoba etc..) Quality, well-formulated moisturizers will combine these emollient ingredients with anti-oxidants such as Vitamin A, C & E in order to help the skin cells repair and rejuvenate themselves.
