Why Skin Ages… The aging of the skin is affected by external and internal factors. Environmentally induced factors include sun damage, pollution , smoking and exposure to other external toxins and free radicals. Intrinsic factors such as genetic cell cessation, hormone depletion and collagen destruction also contribute to the aging of the skin. Collagen and Elastin are the support structures of the skin. As a result of repeated sun exposure and environmentally induced factors, the collagen and elastin become less pliant and the skin becomes less elastic. Skin cell production also slows down due to the effects of sun damage and as we age. This can leave older, dried up cells on the skin’s surface longer than is normal. Combating the effects of Aging: Daily use of a water-soluble, moisturizing cleanser Exfoliate regularly. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps pave the way for healthier skin cells produced in the deeper structures of the skin to migrate to the surface. Daily, liberal use of a sunscreen with a minimum SPF15 containing one of the following active ingredients which protect against the damaging UVA rays: avobenzone, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Moisturizing the skin with an emollient moisturizer made from lipids (plant oils ) and containing protective anti-oxidants such as vitamins A , C & E.
