Wrinkle Reduction

Why does skin wrinkle?

1. The Ageing Process
The skin is comprised of three layers :

Epidermis – outer layer
Dermis – middle layer (collagen/elastin)
Subcutaneous – inner layer (fatty cells)

The dermis possesses an elastic quality due to fibers called elastin and proteins called collagen that help the outer skin look and feel young and firm. As we age our skin cells do not reproduce as quickly and we begin to lose elastin and collagen. The fatty cells in the inner layer of the skin also become less plump causing the skin to become thinner. When the skin is stretched by repeated facial movements (smiling, frowning etc..)  It does not spring back to its initial form. Eventually the outer skin begins to sag and fine lines and wrinkles appear.

2. Environmental Influences & Lifestyle
Sun exposure is the primary culprit towards premature ageing of the skin. Harmful UVA & UVB radiation destroy elastin and collagen and rob the skin of necessary moisture and nutrients needed for healthy cell regeneration. Smoking and other polltants introduce toxins into the body which are also devasting to the structure of the skin, slowing down the ability for the skin to heal itself.

3. Stress
Stress and tension negatively affect all of the bodily processes. The body and skin need ample time to relax in order for recuperative measures to take place .

4. Genetics
Genes also play an important part in how we age. Everyone has a different genetic makeup which affect how our body works, including how we look, age, and recuperate.

Reducing Wrinkles

The best care for the skin is supplied by the natural processes that take place in the skin. We need to minimize the negative effects caused by ageing, environment, stress and genetics and rebuild and stimulate positive processes.

Minimizing negative processes:
1. Leading a healthy lifestyle. Exercising, getting ample rest and avoiding negative choices such as smoking, gives our body and skin its best chance to help itself.

2. Avoiding unprotected UV exposure. Daily, year –round, use of a broad spectrum sunscreen will help avoid radiation, moisture loss and cellular skin damage.

Stimulating positive processes:

1. Supporting the skins natural processes. In order to avoid thinning of the skin and resultant wrinkling, we need to maintain a healthy level of elastin and collagen in the dermis. As we age, the natural processes of the skin may need to be supported to achieve appropriate levels and health. Moisturizing with nutrient-enriched, botanically derived products helps to tighten and plump collagen & elastin. Botanical extracts are rich in essential fatty acids which strengthen the skins’ moisture barrier.

2. Stimulating elastin and collagen growth. New ingredient advancements have greatly helped to fight wrinkles and restore healthy skin. Topical moisturizers containing amino acids called peptides are used to boost and rejuvenate collagen levels and help firm elastin fibers in the skin. They replace damaged proteins and stimulate new collagen, elastin and protein growth.
